Newbury Town Centre Conservation Area

The town of Newbury in West Berkshire can trace its origins back to the 11th Century.

11th December 2023

The town of Newbury in West Berkshire can trace its origins back to the 11th Century. The town’s history is legible in the meandering medieval roads and the narrow passageways that intersect them, in the great variety of historic buildings which line the thoroughfares, and in the characterful alms houses where the sick and needy of the town once resided.

Heritage Architecture were given the opportunity to examine the history, development and architectural character of the town in great detail in the Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan we prepared for the Newbury Town Centre Conservation Area on behalf of West Berkshire Council

The work, which was conducted alongside GL Hearn who are preparing the Masterplan for the town, provides guidance for existing and new development to help preserve the special character of the town for years to come.

Crystal Palace Subway

The Crystal Palace Subway holds a fascinating history, dating back to the 19th century.

14th August 2023

Really interesting afternoon spent recently at Crystal Palace Subway! The London office was invited by DBR Limited to explore one of their ongoing construction sites at this historic location. The Crystal Palace Subway holds a fascinating history, dating back to the 19th century.

Originally constructed as a passageway connecting the Crystal Palace high-level railway station to the exhibition grounds during the Great Exhibition of 1851, it’s now a remarkable piece of architectural heritage. The Grade-II* listed subway’s vaulted ceilings and intricate design make it a captivating sight to behold.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by Talia and James, who walked us around the site, sharing intricate details and historical anecdotes. Their passion for conservation and heritage expertise made the experience truly memorable as we engaged in fascinating discussions about the challenges and triumphs of restoring such a unique piece of our heritage.

Leaving the site, we couldn’t help but feel excitement for the future of Crystal Palace. The vision that the team have for the project is truly remarkable, and we can’t wait to see the final result. Thank you, DBR, for an unforgettable and insightful visit!

The Mall Conservation Area

A great afternoon was spent recently wandering the streets assessing the character of The Mall Conservation Area in the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham.

A great afternoon was spent recently wandering the streets assessing the character of The Mall Conservation Area in the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham.

This Conservation Area is particularly interesting for its close proximity to the River Thames. Our London office is located close by, and we have been involved in several projects within the area over the years. Many of us walk this way to enjoy the river scenes along the Thames path and the offerings on Chiswick Mall for food, drinks and coffee at lunchtime.

The area is rich in fascinating designated assets such as Hammersmith Terrace (Grade II and II* listed), a string of various pubs including The Dove Inn (Grade II) and The Black Lion (Grade II) in prime riverside positions, not to mention the Grade II* listed Hammersmith Bridge linking Hammersmith to Barnes south of the river.
